Mill Street Project Update
MILL STREET PROJECT UPDATE:
The Mill Street Project is underway with a completion schedule of approximately 45 days. This schedule can’t be guaranteed as often projects develop problems that must be solved. This slows down progress. This project is a continuation of the earlier project that was completed at Harrison and McKenzie. We have had questions as to why this project is taking place. Why these streets?
These projects have been in planning for several years and have had the support of the City Council, and Coburg Citizens. The primary reason for this project is to address very serious storm water management issues that created large collections of water in all of the wrong places. Everyone can remember the lake in the Dairy Mart parking lot, in the alley, and in front of the park. These water issues created challenges for local businesses and citizens. Other reasons for the selection of the street include:
1.Safe gateway from downtown to the park
2.Beautification of the downtown and economic development.
The City acknowledges that there was very short notice as to the date and time that this project would begin. The staff deeply apologizes for this as we understand that it is a great inconvenience to local business. In truth, the early start date caught the staff off guard. Due to the amount of road construction taking place at this time, it was truly a surprise that the City received such a positive response to the bid request. Due to the short window of dry months available for construction, the City felt that it was important to move forward. Therefore, the time from when the bid process closed, the contract was awarded, and the project started was extremely swift due to the Contractor's ability to meet the two month completion requirement in the contract.
We ask that you have patience with us as we solve a very real drainage problem in our downtown. We encourage you to consider the businesses affected and get out and shop locally. Perhaps it is a great time to get ahead on your Christmas shopping! These businesses provide convenient shopping to our community year-round. Please show your appreciation by shopping with them at this crucial time.
